Nkubu, Meru County –On the weekend of May 10th and 11th, 2025, Two Cousins Distillers Ltd took a bold step in reimagining corporate responsibility in Kenya’s alcohol industry. In partnership with their local distributor, Golan Heights, the company launched a community-centered event aimed at promoting responsible alcohol consumption among young adults — using the power of sport to drive the message home.
As one of Kenya’s most recognized alcohol manufacturers, Two Cousins Distillers Ltd boasts a wide portfolio of brands, ranging from accessible mass-market labels like Identity Brandy, Identity Gin and Identity Vodka to more premium mainstream offerings like Grayson Whiskey, Q1 Gin and Taiffa Lemonade. Yet, beyond their commercial success, the company has made it clear that it sees itself as a stakeholder in national well-being — particularly when it comes to addressing issues of alcohol misuse.
In an industry often scrutinized for its role in shaping public behavior, Two Cousins Distillers is setting itself apart by proactively engaging in education and awareness campaigns. “We understand that alcohol is meant for enjoyment, not destruction,” Anthony Mbaluka, the company’s Commercial Sales Manager said. “It should never be used in a way that harms individuals, families, or society.”
This ethos was the driving force behind their latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative — a grassroots campaign held in Nkubu, South Imenti Constituency, targeting the local youth. The event was designed not just as a one-off engagement, but as the beginning of a tradition of community involvement rooted in education, empowerment, and entertainment.
The idea was simple but powerful: reach the youth through what speaks most to them — sports. Working hand-in-hand with our distributor Golan Heights, we developed the Trace Cup Football Tournament, a local football tournament involving six of the region’s best performing teams. The teams were fully supported with uniforms, footballs, and safety equipment, with all logistics handled by Two Cousins Distillers Limited.
Trace Vodka, one of the company’s flagship brands, was selected as the sponsor of the cup — not to promote drinking, but to serve as a platform for education. “We wanted to show that alcohol brands can be responsible citizens too,” our Sales and Marketing Manager, Elias Gichuru Reiterated. “We used the brand to spark conversations about moderation, health, and informed decision-making.
The event’s success relied heavily on multi-stakeholder collaboration. Local government officials, including members of the County Administration, Chief and police officers, played a key role in supporting the logistics and community mobilization. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) provided guidance on organizing the matches and ensuring fair play throughout.
The two-day event kicked off with preliminary matches on Saturday, followed by the finals and awards ceremony on Sunday. While the football matches drew crowds in the thousands, it was the messaging around alcohol safety that truly left an impact.
Throughout the weekend, Two Cousins Distillers shared key messages designed to instill healthier drinking habits:
"Chapa Kazi Kwanza, Burudika Ki Shujaa” (Work First, Enjoy Like a Hero): A rallying cry that framed responsible drinking as a reward for hard work, not a pastime for the idle.
These messages were communicated via public addresses, signage and direct engagement with attendees. Local leaders also took to the podium to reinforce the messages and encourage the youth to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Beyond football and health education, the event also included environmental and sanitation activities. Two Cousins Distillers helped clean and maintain stadium washrooms and surrounding areas, emphasizing the role of hygiene in public sports facilities.
There’s no health without hygiene,” one participant noted. “It was refreshing to see a company take such a holistic approach — not just about drinking but about community well-being.”
The Trace Cup Football Tournament was more than just a weekend event — it was a statement of intent. It was a celebration of community, passion and purpose-championing a meaningful cause. With the rallying call “Chapa Hustle Kwanza, Burudika Ki Shujaa”, we as Two Cousins Distillers aimed to inspire responsible drinking among the youth, encouraging a culture of working hard first, the enjoying responsibly later.
“From this event, we learned that our youth are full of potential,” said Anthony Mbaluka. “They only need platforms to express themselves, grow their talents, and be reminded that they are the architects of tomorrow.”
In closing, the company issued a call to fellow alcohol manufacturers and distributors to take up similar roles in shaping a healthier society. “We must shift from profit-only thinking to people-first strategies,” the company’s Commercial Sales Manager concluded. “If we invest in healthy communities today, we ensure the sustainability of our industry and our nation tomorrow.”
Two Cousins Distillers has set a precedent for social responsible branding in Kenya’s liquor industry. By fusing sport, community service, and health advocacy, we are challenging long-held perceptions and creating a blueprint for ethical business practices in the alcohol sector.
“Massive kudos to all the teams for bringing incredible spirit, talent and sportsmanship to the pitch-your energy made the Trace Cup Tournament a resounding success.” Elias Gichuru, Sales and Marketing Manager concluded.
With the promise of future editions of the Trace Cup Tournament, the communities of Meru — and beyond — have a lot to look forward to, both on and off the pitch.
